As a professional guitar teacher, one of the questions I get from most of my students is
“What sort of guitar should I buy?” and/or “How much should I spend?”
In this 4 part series, I hope to arm you with as much knowledge possible to help ensure you make the right purchase of the right instrument at the right price for YOU!
This comes as no surprise as it truly IS a confusing world out there with so many options and price ranges available. (Not to mention some shonky dealers who are more than happy to sell you any piece of junk to line their own pockets with your hard earned money!).
In Part 2 I will help you make the decision between purchasing an electric or acoustic guitar.
My first bit of advice is to NOT buy a guitar from any of the online auction sites, nor for that matter any of the online superstores that sell everything under the sun from baby rattles to “professional” guitars. It’s not that you can’t certainly find a great quality guitar at a bargain. I’m sure you can and I know people who have, but it’s very difficult to assess the quality of the item you are buying without being able to pick it up and try it out for yourself. So, unless you know or trust an online seller (or they have a full satisfaction or refund policy), my advice is to pay that little bit more by visiting a bricks and mortar shop for your first guitar.
Another good idea (if you want to buy used and save some money) is to try and arrange with an online seller in your local area the chance to personally visit prior to buying/bidding. Also, look out for sales notices on notice boards or in your local newspaper. You could also try placing an inexpensive ad yourself. Yard / Garage sales are another excellent way to find a bargain.
